Crieff is
the main town of Strathearn lying on the southern edge of the Scottish Highlands.
It is a holiday resort and is second largest town in Perthshire with a population
of almost 6000. The name comes from the Gaelic craobh - 'among trees'.
The town spills from the Knock, the wooded hill above, down past the Highland
Games park to the River Earn. James Square with it's fountain marks the centre
of the town. Montrose, Rob Roy Macgregor, Bonnie Prince Charlie, Robert Burns and many others from Scotland's colourful history have walked Crieff's historic High Street. Glenturret Distillery outside Crieff claims to be Scotland's oldest, has exhibitions, restaurants and guided tours. Crieff also has a purpose built Visitor Centre housing a paperweight factory and pottery. Nearby is Stuart Crystal factory outlet.
